Why be Catholic?

(by Father Matt Hartley www.catholicstreet.com)

"eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it even dawned on man what God has prepared for those who love Him (1 Cor. 2:9)."

If God exists and Jesus Christ is His only begotten Son, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, then we must ask, "Did Jesus found a Church and is it still around today?" The answer to both of these questions is YES! If we look at the history of Christian churches, the Roman Catholic Church is the only one that goes back to the time of Jesus. In fact, even Compton's 1999 Interactive Encyclopedia states that Roman Catholicism was founded in the 1st century. As Cardinal John Henry Newman, a convert to Catholicism, once stated, "To be deep in history is to cease to be a Protestant."

Moreover, Jesus Christ gave the keys of the kingdom of heaven to St. Peter, the first pope, and promised that the gates of hell would never prevail against the Church (Mt 16:18-20). Though she has existed for close to two thousand years, the Catholic Church has never erred or changed her teachings regarding faith and morals. Indeed, she is able to prove her claim to be Christ's Church, and " the pillar and foundation of truth (1 Tim. 3:15)."

Although the Catholic Church is made up of sinners, the sins of her members don't disprove the truth of Christ and His teachings, but witness to God's great mercy in constantly calling us to Himself. Indeed, she is also made up of great saints, bearing witness to the profound fulfillment that Jesus Christ can bring to our lives, such that "eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it even dawned on man what God has prepared for those who love Him (1 Cor. 2:9)."

"The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and left untried." - G.K. Chesterton

The Church that Jesus Founded

Online Book
  • The Continuity of the Catholic Church - A Bishop shows that Jesus Christ founded the Catholic Church and refutes theories of Apostasy in early Christianity. The Most Reverend Duane G. Hunt D.D. wrote this brilliant book while he was Catholic Bishop of Salt Lake City. It was written to counter Mormon claims that there was an apostasy in the early centuries of the Church and a loss of Divine authority.
